I adore the work of Bliss Lau. It embodies everything I love in jewelry (sidenote: sometimes I think I am actually repressed jewelry designer myself but that is another story). It’s a mix between punk and proper, delicate and bold. I especially love her larger body pieces which are more akin to pieces of clothing than jewelry. They could be described as medieval, 1920s and completely contemporary. Each would be totally accurate. Lau’s work has a way of effortlessly straddling influences and eras.

So I was excited to see her collaboration with emerging artist Heather Benjamin on the lookbook for her S/S 12 collection. Instead of the usual soft focus high fashion photography, Lau chose to go in another direction entirely. Benjamin’s manga-inspired illustrated zine “Sad Sex” caught the eye of Lau and a design partnership was born.

The tough vampy girls sprung straight from Benjamin’s imagination are the perfect foil for Lau’s unusual pieces. It’s an inspired combination and one that perfectly conveys Lau’s aesthetic. “We had this idea of this naughty girl running rampant through the city doing things like smoking, hanging out with tigers, just this idea of this magical, sexy, sort of wicked girl that has fur coats and an amazing manicure but is like totally cool and punk rock, and she does dark things but she does them in fabulous ways,” says Lau. I love that description almost as much as I love her collection.

I love a good cuff bracelet. It’s such a strong and sculptural look. And of course it’s pretty obvious that I am all about the strong accessories. Lately I am especially loving pairs of them, worn Wonder Woman style with one on each wrist. Fortunately there are a ton of great options out there right now, at both the high and low ends of the scale.

Winter has finally arrived here in all its angry icy glory. My footwear choices have become limited to the boots that I own which actually have some traction and I never leave the house without both a sweater and a wool coat. But there has to be something somewhat exciting about dressing for cold weather and I think winter accessories are it. Especially scarves! I am crazy for scarves, as is evidenced by my rather ridiculous collection. You can never have enough in my mind which is why I think that any of these lovely things would make a great addition to my collection. Brrrrrrr!

Last year at this time I was already working on putting together some chic Christmas wishlist items. I am still not ready to go there this year, but I am willing to start thinking about all the seasonal parties that are soon to begin. However, I am an accessories girl through and through. I can reuse the same dress year after year but I always like to have new shoes and a new bag to give it some oomph. These clutches will add a dash of zing to your tried-and-true party ensemble. Metallics and neons are particularly hot this year, plus most of these are fashion forward enough to carry you well into next spring.
