{real estate dreaming} The VGH Prize Home

Posted: November 19th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Real Estate Dreaming | Tags: , , | Comments Off

I’m a little late this week! This post should have been yesterday but I’ve been working on a project and I’ve been consumed by AutoCAD for the last few days (AutoCAD for MAC that is – woooooofrigginhooo it’s about time!).

Anyways, I am doing something a little different. Today I am spotlighting the VGH/UBC hospital lottery prize home. I know it sounds kind of horrifying and this usually isn’t the type of thing I get swoon-y over but this one is really quite amazing. Trust. In other areas there are huge designer showcase homes but here in Vancouver, our hospital showhomes have turned into the closest approximate thing. They are usually designed by a marquee designer, as was the case with this one (designed by Kelly Deck Design).

Usually these types of homes are renovations of existing structures but this one was a new build. Not to mention they completed both design and construction in a jaw-dropping seven months. (Thinking about that gives me heart palpitations!) The place is huge -5200 sq.ft. and is worth a cool $3.2 million.

The home has a pretty darned spectacular location in White Rock, with views of both the ocean and Mount Baker. Mere mortals usually have to make due by accepting views of one or the other. No need to choose!

The kitchen is my favorite part even though the design is fairly simple and straightforward. What can I say – white kitchens never fail to thrill me! The island is a massive fifteen feet long and has four large pendants over top. It also has one of my favorite details-of-the-moment: the waterfall edge. (If you win, please don’t let anyone put down their red wine glass on that Bianco Statuario baby ok?)

The master bedroom and ensuite are also spectacular. The master bedroom is 620 sq.ft. To put this in perspective, there are many $500,000 apartments in Vancouver that are less than 600 sq.ft. in total. Basically, it’s huuuuuge.

It’s a gorgeous space and is currently open daily from 11-5 for tours (14495 Marine Dr. White Rock). If you want to try your luck you can also buy tickets online – BC residents only – here. (There is also a home in Kitsilano to win as well which is also beautiful but just not quite as spectacular.) I think I might have to break down and buy a ticket on this one! It’s just too good.

{real estate dreaming} The Gastown Loft

…sort of. This loft has already been bought and sold but I am still in love with it (you never forget the one that got away). If I had my magic wand handy I would wave it and *poof* move in immediately. As much as I love a good renovation project, the thought of moving someplace that is already so lovely is incredibly tempting. Plus: double height heritage loft…that’s not available often around here.

Hello beautiful windows!

Love the stainless counter with white ceramic sink – very different for a kitchen!

This bathroom is so simple but I love it. I want to to mine up using this as inspiration (minus the double sinks though unfortunately). I do think it needs a good piece of art on that big wall, but other than that it’s pretty much perfect in every way.

Major swoon!

As seen on Lofts Vancouver (which, yes, does also have listings for places that you can actually buy).

{real estate dreaming} The Seattle Tower

There are few things I love more than real estate fairy tales. You know what I mean -those lucky souls who manage through luck and circumstance to end up in the most fabulous and enviable digs imaginable. As is this tale of a family of four in Seattle occupying one of the most exceptional spaces I have ever seen.

I am going to look more closely at this building the next time I am in Seattle. I would never in a million years have guessed that it was a private residence. I mean, people just don’t get to live in glass domes in the city….do they?

It seems they do.

Clearly the Lahaies were saints in a previous life.

If you want more, you can read the enviable details over at the NY Times.
